There is a good reason why I´m suggesting you build your muscle for discomfort.

One of the main priorities for our brain is to see to it that we are safe. Not necessarily that we are happy or enjoy ourselves. But safe from danger. This has everything to do with history and biology. Since our brain was developed to function in another kind of environment compared to the one we are living in, in today´s world.

Discomfort is a feeling we have. If you think of it, discomfort is not equal for you and me. A situation I might feel discomfort in is something you are used to and will feel more or less comfortable in. And vice versa.

What we usually do when we feel discomfort is, we tend to avoid or walk away from it if and whenever it is possible. It is our brain that tells us to avoid unsafe or dangerous situations. Our brain tells us to keep safe and save energy.

Change how you think about discomfort

What if we turn this around. As mentioned discomfort is a feeling and we do not have to be afraid of feelings. They will pass. In the situation they might be tough and feel like we cannot cope with them, but they will pass.

On the contrary, we can decide to move towards our feelings and walk through them. Moving forward in this way will build our muscle for discomfort and it will keep us growing.
⠀
Building your muscle for discomfort by stretching it just a tiny little bit every day, will have you take on further challenges.⠀
⠀
Then again, staying put by living the same way today as you where living yesterday will feel safe but it is not going to grow you. Not in any way shape or form.

How to build your muscle for discomfort

To build our muscle for discomfort we don´t have to outrageous or grand. We can start by using small hacks, things we can do in our everyday life. If you are not used to eating out alone, try doing that. If you are used to standing in the elevator facing towards the door, try turning around. It will feel awkward but funny at the same time. Building this on, day by day is going to change how you feel in different situations. ⠀
⠀
Do something that feels uncomfortable for you and you will realize you will have built your muscle for discomfort. One small step at a time. ⠀
