Why does meditation help us build confidence?
We have around 60.000 thoughts swirling around in our heads on a daily basis. These thoughts can be both true and false, and everything in between. They can be based on what we think are facts as well as what we ourselves believe is true. Our thoughts can be both unintentional and intentional. Many times they are a form of chatter or noise in our heads that we are more or less unaware of. Mostly though, our thoughts are playing on repeat as we think the same thoughts day in and day out.
Since the number of thoughts bouncing around in our heads is huge, we should really focus on what is circulating up there, right? Imagine if even a fraction of those thoughts are saying: you’re stupid, don´t do that, it´s too hard, it will never work, I can’t do this… What will happen if I lose my job, what if I get sick… What is your version of these thoughts?
Without paying attention to our thoughts we are not able to truly see what is going on. Worst case scenario, you become a product of thoughts you were never aware of. Nor did you ever choose them on purpose. Remember this?
My thoughts create my feelings. It is my feelings that drive my actions and inactions, which in turn result in the results I have in my life.
Why then can meditation help us grow confidence?
The monkey mind or the chatter described earlier is not helping us in any way or form. Repetitive negative thought patterns can instead make us feel stressed or anxious. This is why distancing ourselves from them can have a positive impact. Though meditation does not mean we stop thinking, we can practice seeing our thoughts for what they are.
By meditating we become better at choosing what kind of thoughts we want to occupy our minds with. Additionally, we will realize that thoughts are only thoughts. Some of them do not require special attention. Those unfriendly thoughts are simply that, thoughts. And they can be changed to far better ones with some practice.
Without meditation, we are at the mercy of our minds. The mind controls us instead of the other way around.
